Legislation Issues

L8 Legislation - Water Regulations for the control of Legionella

We are able to offer our customers guidance on how to minimise risks and maintain the water services within a building in order to meet latest legislation. Listed below are important considerations when changing or upgrading your present water storage tank. All installations comply with the new regulations.

Cleaning

The inside surface of all our cold water storage tanks and lids has an isophthalic gel coat which prevents the growth of micro-organisms and, having a smooth surface, also assists in the cleaning process. Lack of contamination within a tank will ensure there is no food source for many types of bacteria.

Water Movement and Volume

All tanks should be designed to allow the free flow of water from the incoming supply to the down service and these should ideally be located at opposite ends of the tank. When this is not possible, a sparge pipe can be used to ensure that good cross flow is achieved. The volume of wholesome water stored should reflect the usage per day within a building or installation and you should refer to BS6700 for further guidance on calculations. (G8.1)

Heat Gain/Loss

Legionella bacteria will multiply in warm water. To prevent this we offer an option of applying insulation during the manufacturing process, with provision made for fittings. This production method ensures long term performance of the insulation material by preventing moisture from penetrating the outer covering. Various thicknesses of insulation are available, to suit the end use and positioning of the tank. (G16.13)

Safeguarding Water Quality

Fitting screened vent and screened overflow/warning pipes will prevent dust, vermin or other foreign bodies from entering the storage tank. This will also allow for the free movement of air when the tank water level changes. Lids on tanks have a closed-cell gasket applied and fixings used are stainless steel. This principle also applies to the access hatch. (G16.8)
